A Puzzling First Friday Funday

On Friday, August 12, the middle school experienced their first Friday Funday of the year. On Friday Fundays, Houses compete against each other in a variety of different formats to win House points towards our annual competition. On this past Friday, the Houses were challenged by puzzling escape rooms. The latest rage in entertainment, escape rooms encourage players to use their wits to solve puzzles in order to escape a locked room. Although students were not technically locked in the rooms, they did have to solve a number of challenging puzzles including heat-changing thermochromic paint, invisible ink, UV lights, trivia, maps, and number cyphers. Each room was themed after the students' House, so in the process they were challenged to learn about their Houses' namesakes. At the end of the challenging 45 minutes, Church House won by being the only House to successfully escape, although four of the other five Houses were very close behind. While hopefully a fun endeavor, it also encouraged students to think critically, bond as a House, and begin to realize their House's strengths and weaknesses. Now, we wait with anticipation to see what type of challenge the next Friday Funday holds....
